'Nikki' still on the lam after shoving 18-pack of beer up her shirt

CRESTVIEW — A 26-year-old woman was charged with stealing beer from a Tom Thumb without entering the convenience store.
On April 2, the woman drove her red Chevrolet Impala to the Tom Thumb at 994 James Lee Boulevard. She parked the car at the edge of the parking lot, which was out of the sight of the cashier.
The woman’s passenger, identified only as “Nikki,” went into the store, grabbed an 18-pack of Bud Light beer, shoved it under her shirt and left the store without paying, according to an arrest report from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
The cashier followed Nikki out of the store and took down the license plate of the Impala. Later, the 26-year-old owner of the Impala dropped Nikki off at an unknown location, the report said.
The driver was charged with larceny, a second degree misdemeanor

Suspect in Cape Coral police shooting member of 'KGB' gang

New details are emerging about what happened early Saturday morning, when a gang member reportedly fired three shots at a Cape Coral Police officer during a traffic stop.
Police have reported that Yousel Lopez Rivera, 20, a passenger in the car, shot Officer David Wagoner three times at point blank range, causing life-threatening injuries. Wagoner, a husband and father of three, is expected to make a full recovery.
After the shooting, Rivera is reported to have jumped in the driver’s seat on top of his girlfriend, and drove the car a short distance before crashing it into a residence. Rivera then fled on foot. His girlfriend and a male occupant of the home were transported to the hospital.
Rivera was later found hiding in a garbage can.
According to the probable cause affidavit obtained by The News-Press this morning, Rivera shed his clothing before taking cover in a garbage can. Officers later found a trail of purple shorts, a purple belt, a black t-shirt and black sneakers leading to his location in a trash bin on NW Juanita Place.

Detective Christy Jo Ellis reported that when Rivera was discovered in the trash can and tried to flee, a K9 officer chased after the naked Rivera, who tried to break free by punching and kicking at the dog. He was eventually overpowered and caught.
Once handcuffed and in the back of the cruiser, Rivera tried to wedge his head in between the seat cushions. He was immediately taken out and transported by EMS to Cape Coral Hospital for minor injuries sustained from the crash and the dog. He was treated and then released.
Rivera’s girlfriend, identified in the report’s narrative as “A.P.,” later told police she was stunned by what happened.
She said immediately after Rivera fired the shots, he shouted, “I’m not going back!” He then jumped into her lap and took control of the car.
Rivera was released from Lee County Jail last November after being held for two months on charges of assault, marijuana possession, property damage and giving false identification to law enforcement. But those charges were eventually dropped, according to court records.
“A.P. said she kept telling him to ‘Stop!’ and ‘Get off!’ (of her). She said she was scared for her life, she was frightened and she kept begging him to stop. She said they continued to speed away when all of a sudden the car crashed into something, stopping abruptly.”
The girlfriend was knocked unconscious by the crash. When she came to, Rivera was gone.
The tattoos covering Rivera’s body include the phrases, “Death before Dishonor” on his upper right arm, “Cuba Pride” on his back, and on his chest, “Made in Dade,” “God Knows” and a six-point star.
When Wagoner, a four-year veteran of the department, first approached the 2000 Cadillac on the driver’s side around 1 that morning, he asked both occupants for identification. The girl gave hers, but Rivera said he didn’t have any. So while the girl searched for her insurance and registration information, Wagoner walked around to the passenger side.
Without warning, Rivera allegedly fired three or four shots, striking the officer three times, twice in a bullet-proof vest and once just below it.
Wagoner was able to fire a few shots back, though neither Rivera nor his girlfriend were struck as the car sped away. Wagoner then radioed for help and provided a description of the shooter and car.
He was transported by trauma alert to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a life-threatening abdominal wound.
Rivera is being held without bond at Lee County Jail on a charge of attempted murder while in certain felony offense.

Pearl Harbor Survivor Found Living in Filth, Caretaker Arrested

L CAJON, Calif. -- The caretaker of a 93-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor found disoriented and living in filth in his San Diego County home pleaded not guilty to elder abuse and other felonies Thursday.

Milagros Angeles, 62, is charged with false imprisonment of an elder, theft by a caretaker and altering checks to steal thousands of dollars from her employer.

She was ordered held on $1 million bail.

Deputy District Attorney Danielle Hickman told the judge that Angeles had been working for widower Arnold Bauer since 2009.
The war veteran's bank became concerned when employees noticed he hadn't been in since October and notified Adult Protective Services, Hickman said.

When deputies arrived at the home in unincorporated El Cajon on Tuesday, they found Bauer clutching a photograph of his ship, the USS Vestal, said Sgt. Mark Varnau of the Sheriff Department's Elder Abuse Unit.

The Vestal was moored next to the USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Bauer was dehydrated and disoriented, suffering either from dementia or Alzheimer's disease, and did not want to let the deputies in his home, Varnau said.

"He's frail, but he did not appear to have been physically beaten or abused," he said.

Bauer's wife died in 2007, according to an obituary in The San Diego Union-Tribune. His two children live in Santa Barbara and San Pedro but they ?were unaware of their father's living conditions and hadn't visited for a significant period of time, Varnau said.

"We see this all the time," he said. "We see ourselves in this guy. No one deserves to live like this."

Varnau said Angeles is a legal resident from the Philippines but doesn't have permanent residency status.

Over three months last year, she is suspected of stealing $28,000, Varnau said.

The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association confirmed that Bauer was on the Vestal.

Caller tells cops man broke windshield, leaves out that he tried to run him over

Maryland Heights man who is deaf had an interpreter report to police earlier this month that a man broke the windshield of his car.

What Andrew H. Stcyr, 24, failed to have the caller mention, according to police, is that he was trying to run over the man at the time. And he tried to run him over not once, but twice.

Stcyr, of Maryland Heights, faces felony charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

Stcyr was contacted by the Journal through an interpreter with the video relay service. During that phone call an interpreter was in video contact with Stcyr and therefore able to use sign language.

Stcyr referred questions to his attorney, Michael Kielty.

“I think it is just a misunderstanding,” Kielty said. “I haven’t seen the police report yet so I can’t comment further.”

Lt. Craig McGuire, of the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department, said the incident appeared to be a case of road rage.

It began near the traffic signal at Jungs Station Road and Upper Bottom Road shortly after 1 p.m. Jan. 14 when James A. Richardson, 52, of St. Louis, said he noticed a Lincoln Town Car following closely behind his Ford Taurus.

Richardson told officers he stopped at the signal and Stcyr began blowing his horn.

McGuire said Stcyr followed Richardson onto Arrow Rock Drive where he forced him to pull over. Stcyr was not only blowing his horn, but yelling at Richardson as well, McGuire said.

Richardson exited his car and approached the Lincoln. Stcyr drove into Richardson, throwing him onto the hood and breaking the windshield, McGuire said. Richardson rolled off the hood and, according to McGuire, Stcyr drove into him again.

Stcyr reportedly left the scene, and Richardson was taken to SSM St. Joseph Health Center for treatment. He has since been released.

Maryland Heights police later were contacted by an interpreter calling on behalf of Stcyr, who reported that a man had smashed his windshield, McGuire said.

Stcyr was released from the St. Charles County jail Jan. 19 after posting a $20,000 bond.

Stcyr was ordered to stay away from Richardson as part of his release.

“Mr. Stcyr is hostile towards the victim for an unknown reason,” according to a deputy’s statement in the court file.

Geezer Bandit strikes again, robbing his 13th bank in California, FBI says

The Geezer Bandit has apparently struck again, this time in Santa Barbara County, for his 13th bank robbery in California, the FBI announced Saturday.

Given his nickname due to his apparently advanced age, the robber hit a Bank of America branch in Goleta in Santa Barbara County on Friday afternoon, threatening tellers with a revolver.

His appearance -- 60 to 70 years old, about 6 feet tall, dressed in a blazer, dark pants and a baseball cap -- and demeanor matched the other robberies.

The same person is suspected of 10 bank robberies in San Diego County, one in Kern County and one in Riverside County, starting in August 2009.

In recent robberies, authorities have suggested that the robber may be wearing an "old-man" theatrical mask.

The FBI and several banks are offering a reward of $20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Brave local man makes it to work on time - after heroically saving man sprawled on No. 6 track

An East Harlem man was being hailed as a subway hero for pulling a straphanger off the tracks Sunday, saving him from being crushed by a train.
Lifesaver Carlos Flores, 36, said a combination of benevolence and not wanting to miss an overtime shift at his grocery store job prompted his derring-do.
"I was thinking, if he gets hit I can't go to work. It's Sunday. I can't miss out. It's a time-and-a-half day," Flores told the Daily News.

Love is blind: The man who lost his sight every time he had sex

man was forced to seek medical help after going temporarily blind every time he had sex.
The unnamed patient would lose his sight every time he climaxed during intercourse.
Bafflingly, the blindness would never occur while performing any other strenuous exercise, the NCBI ROFL blog claimed.
The original report, published by the Department of Ophthalmology at Glostrup Hospital, University of Copenhagen, revealed the cause of the condition to be vasoconstriction, where the muscle walls contract around a blood vessel, restricting the flow of blood.
Vasoconstriction is the same condition that causes erectile dysfunction.
Doctors had earlier speculated that an embolism was causing the man’s blindness.
The report said: ‘Hypothetical mechanisms of transient monocular visual loss in our patient include vasoconstriction or embolism in the arterial blood supply of the eye.
‘The repeated and completely transient nature of our patient's symptoms supports the fact that embolism was not involved.’
The patient was eventually treated using drugs to widen his blood vessels
